Wholesome Weekend Roundup: 8/12/17

Grab a cup of tea and sit down for some good reads. It’s the Wholesome Weekend Roundup featuring my top health and wellness links from around the web this week.

The Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers of ‘Healthy’ Foods That Cause Disease and Weight Gain – I cringe every time I hear the phrase, “healthy whole grains”. Because, really? Do you even know about lectins?

Eating Processed Sugar Found to Cause Depression…But Magnesium Reverses It – If you’ve ever over-indulged in sugary treats then this headline is no surprise to you. Sugar does affect ones mood. There’s no doubt about that. Thankfully, magnesium is a simple solution to combat the moodiness that sugar causes. You can also try cutting processed sugars out of your diet. But I get it. That’s a lot easier said than done for most people.

Gene Editing for ‘Designer Babies’? Highly Unlikely, Scientists Say – I’m glad this is unlikely because ‘designer babies’ sounds like a recipe for disaster. Why would you want that?

Gluten: Weapon of Mass Destruction – A valid reason for giving up gluten, even if you’re not sensitive to it.

When Estrogen and Testosterone Get Out of Whack, Here’s What to Do – I suspect that many people have ‘out of whack’ hormones. Our modern lifestyles will do that.

Stroke and Dementia Risk Grows with Intake of Artificial Sweeteners – Just another one of many reasons not to drink diet soda. Even those so-called ‘healthier’ versions of smoothies at Jamba Juice that use Splenda in place of sugar are a no-go. But that should be a no-brainer.

Playing Action Video Games Can Actually Harm Your Brain – Gamer men are a huge turn off. I’m not referencing anyone in particular, just saying… Also, I had several students in the past who skipped homework in favor of playing video games and I can tell you from witnessing their behavior and ‘mental capacity’ that it really does harm ones brain. I kind of get the appeal. But really, aren’t there much better things you can be doing with your time?

Here’s Why You Feel Healthier, Happier & More Energetic in the Summer – This is a great list of reasons why summer is awesome.

Genes to Know About: MTHFR – I got all nerdy over this article about MTHFR because genetics is fascinating. I carry one mutated MTHFR gene. Though not so severe as most people who suffer MTHFR gene mutations. But this mutant gene is why I cannot eat gluten and I suffer from migraines and skin problems when I do. It’s not really the gluten that does me in, per say. It’s the folic acid that most gluten-containing foods are fortified with. Plus the lectins that my body has a hard time processing (see the fourth link above). This is also why I was so quick to develop a B12 deficiency when I was vegan over a decade ago.

Deaths From Colon Cancer Are Up In Younger, White People – “We’re having more disease for some reason that we don’t understand…” The media is going to blame this issue on meat. But no. It’s the whole standard American diet in general that’s causing so much disease. How and why they don’t understand is beyond me. My guess is they understand completely but don’t want to blame the industries (i.e. corn, soy, sugar) that pay them.

A Danger to Public Health? Uproar As Scientist Urges Us to Eat More Salt – “There are literally millions of people who are at risk of salt deficiency, with over six million people in the US alone diagnosed with low sodium levels in the blood every year.” And yet we’re told to avoid sodium to prevent high blood pressure. Something just isn’t adding up here.

What Do Your Cholesterol Numbers Mean? – There’s a list of foods to eat and foods to avoid, plus lifestyle advice in here that’s actually good advice.
